Living well with Parkinson’s takes more than medication alone. For many families searching for Parkinson’s disease care in Melbourne, the biggest challenge is finding support that fits around daily life rather than disrupting it. At Home Based Health, our nurses and allied health clinicians deliver specialist Parkinson’s support in your own home, helping you or your loved one stay active, connected and confident at every stage of the condition.
Why In-Home Care Makes Sense for Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects everyone differently. Movement changes such as tremor, stiffness and slowness are the most recognised symptoms, but many people also experience changes to their voice, swallowing, nutrition, balance and energy levels.
Travelling to multiple clinic appointments each week can be tiring and, for some, genuinely difficult. In-home care removes that barrier. Therapy also tends to be more practical when it happens where daily life actually occurs — practising a louder voice at your own kitchen table, or reviewing mealtime safety with the foods you actually eat.
Our clinicians visit clients across Melbourne’s Inner East, including Hawthorn, Camberwell, Kew, Toorak, Malvern, Glen Iris, Richmond and South Yarra.
Specialist Speech Pathology for Parkinson’s
Many people with Parkinson’s notice changes to their speech or voice over time — often a softer voice, reduced clarity or a feeling that others frequently ask them to repeat themselves. The encouraging news is that intensive, evidence-based therapy programs can make a real difference.
LSVT LOUD® and SPEAK OUT!® Programs
Home Based Health’s in-home speech pathologists are trained to deliver two internationally recognised Parkinson’s speech treatment programs:
LSVT LOUD® is an intensive program that focuses on vocal loudness, delivered over four sessions per week for four weeks. It helps people with Parkinson’s recalibrate their sense of how loud their voice really is, so speaking at a clear, audible volume feels natural again.
SPEAK OUT!® takes a similar intensive approach, teaching people to speak “with intent” — converting speech from an automatic activity into a deliberate one, supported by structured daily practice.
Because both programs are intensive by design, completing them at home removes a significant amount of travel fatigue and makes it easier to stay the course.
Swallowing Assessment and Support
Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) are common in Parkinson’s and can affect mealtime safety, enjoyment and nutrition. Our speech pathologists assess swallowing in the home environment and, where detailed imaging is helpful, can arrange videofluoroscopy through Melbourne Voice Lab at Lumus Imaging, Holmesglen Hospital Moorabbin. From there, we work with you on practical strategies — texture modifications, safer swallowing techniques and mealtime routines — that fit your life.
Nursing and Allied Health That Work Together
Parkinson’s rarely affects just one part of life, which is why a coordinated team matters.
In-Home Registered Nursing
Our registered nurses support people with Parkinson’s with medication management — where timing is especially important — continence support, skin integrity and monitoring of overall health. They also act as an experienced set of eyes, flagging changes early so your GP or neurologist has the information they need.
Dietetics
Weight loss, constipation and the interaction between protein intake and some Parkinson’s medications are common nutrition concerns. Our at-home dietitians provide individualised advice using your own kitchen and routines as the starting point.
Podiatry
Foot care, footwear advice and attention to balance-related concerns from our home podiatry team support safer, more comfortable mobility.
NDIS and Referral Pathways
Home Based Health is a registered NDIS provider. For NDIS participants with Parkinson’s, our services can be funded through Capacity Building supports, and we’re experienced in working alongside support coordinators, plan managers and support teams. We also welcome referrals for privately funded clients and can discuss options for other funding streams.
Referrals can come from anyone — GPs, neurologists, support coordinators, family members or clients themselves.
What to Expect From Your First Visit
Every client begins with a comprehensive in-home assessment. Your clinician will take time to understand your goals — whether that’s being heard clearly at family dinners, staying safe on your feet, or remaining in your own home for as long as possible — and build a plan around them. From there, your team communicates regularly so your care stays coordinated as your needs change.
