Up to 90% of people living with Parkinson’s disease will experience changes to their voice or speech at some stage. Speech may become softer, breathier or harder to understand — often so gradually that family members notice before the person does. The good news: these changes respond well to evidence-based voice therapy, and you don’t need to travel to a clinic to access it.
At Home Based Health, our experienced speech pathologists deliver Parkinson’s voice therapy in the comfort of your own home across Melbourne’s Inner East, including Hawthorn, Camberwell, Kew, Toorak, Malvern, Glen Iris, Richmond and South Yarra.
Why Does Parkinson’s Affect the Voice?
Parkinson’s disease affects the brain’s ability to regulate movement — and speaking is one of the most finely coordinated movements we make. Common changes include a quiet or monotone voice (hypophonia), reduced clarity of speech, a hoarse or breathy vocal quality, and difficulty being heard in noisy environments.
Many people with Parkinson’s also perceive their own voice as louder than it actually is, which means they don’t self-correct. That’s why structured, intensive therapy makes such a difference.
Evidence-Based Programs We Offer
LSVT LOUD® (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment)
LSVT LOUD® is one of the most researched speech treatments for Parkinson’s disease. Delivered as an intensive program of sessions over four weeks, it retrains the voice to a healthy, sustainable loudness and recalibrates the person’s perception of their own volume. Research shows improvements in vocal loudness, intonation and speech intelligibility that can last well beyond the program.
SPEAK OUT!® Therapy
SPEAK OUT!® converts speech from an automatic activity to an intentional one, using the principle of “speaking with intent.” It combines individual sessions with daily home practice and is followed by ongoing maintenance to keep results strong.
Our speech pathologists are trained in both programs and will recommend the right fit after a comprehensive assessment.
Why Home-Based Therapy Works So Well
Voice therapy is about carryover — using the stronger voice in real life, not just in a clinic room. Practising at home means therapy happens in the exact environment where you communicate every day: talking across the kitchen, answering the phone, chatting with family. It also removes travel fatigue, which matters for people managing Parkinson’s symptoms, and makes it easier for family members to be involved in practice.
As part of a multidisciplinary team, our speech pathologists collaborate with your neurologist, GP and other health professionals to keep everyone informed of your progress.
Beyond the Voice: Swallowing Support
Parkinson’s can also affect swallowing (dysphagia). Our team provides in-home swallowing assessments and management plans, and videofluoroscopy evaluations are available through Melbourne Voice Lab at Lumus Imaging, Holmesglen Hospital, Moorabbin (ENT or GP referral required).
Funding Options
Parkinson’s voice therapy may be funded through the NDIS, a Home Care Package, or privately. We’re happy to talk through what applies to your situation.
